When you see the words “5-star” attached to holiday accommodation, it is easy to assume they simply mean luxury.

At Carmagnac, our official 5-star classification as a meublé de tourisme means rather more than that.

It recognises a standard of accommodation, facilities and guest experience — but for us, achieving the classification was never the end of the story. It established a benchmark that we aim to maintain, and improve upon, for every couple who stays with us.

What is a 5-star meublé de tourisme?

In France, furnished holiday accommodation can be officially classified from 1 to 5 stars.

The classification looks at a broad range of criteria covering the accommodation itself, the facilities provided, services available to guests and aspects of accessibility and sustainability.

Five stars represents the highest level of this classification system.

So when we describe Carmagnac as 5-star accommodation, it isn't simply a phrase we've chosen for the website. It reflects an independently assessed classification.

But what does 5-star mean when you're actually staying here?

For us, this is the more important question.

Guests aren't coming to Carmagnac to inspect a checklist. They're coming to switch off, spend time together and enjoy somewhere special.

That means the details matter.

A beautifully comfortable Tempur king-size bed. Full air conditioning when the Charente summer gets hot. Your own private hot tub overlooking the countryside. A thoughtfully equipped kitchen. Entertainment when you want it. Peace and privacy when you don't.

And, perhaps most importantly, an apartment prepared for just two adults.

Carmagnac isn't a large holiday property that happens to accept couples. The experience is deliberately centred around them.

Five stars also means looking after what guests don't see

Some of the most important work happens before a guest ever walks through the door.

We continually maintain, replace and improve things at Carmagnac. If something isn't right, we deal with it.

Recently, while preparing for arriving guests, our washing machine failed. A replacement was ordered immediately and installed before they arrived.

That's hardly the glamorous side of running luxury accommodation — but it illustrates something we believe strongly.

Luxury isn't simply what a property looks like when everything is working. It's how it is looked after when something isn't.

Guests shouldn't have to deal with our problems.

We don't believe five stars means formal

There's another misconception about luxury accommodation.

Five-star doesn't have to mean stiff, impersonal or over-serviced.

Carmagnac is self-catering and completely private, giving couples the freedom to spend their holiday exactly as they choose.

Have breakfast at noon. Open a bottle of wine outside as the sun goes down. Spend an afternoon in the hot tub. Head into Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, explore the Charente countryside or simply decide you're going nowhere at all.

There is no timetable here.

The setting is part of the luxury

Some things can't be measured particularly well by a classification system.

The silence of the countryside.

The huge skies.

Sitting outside together in the evening.

Waking up without traffic outside your window.

Having somewhere that genuinely feels private.

For many of our guests, those things ultimately become as important as the facilities.

Five stars set the standard. Our guests tell us whether we're achieving it.

We're proud of Carmagnac's official 5-star classification.

But we're equally proud of what happens afterwards: couples staying here, enjoying the place and taking the time to leave wonderful reviews about their experience.

That's the standard we're interested in maintaining.

Not luxury for show.

Comfort, privacy, attention to detail and a beautiful place for two people to disappear to for a few days.

That's what 5-star Carmagnac means to us.
